Hey Brossy Woman!
If you follow us on Instagram, you know that this week I tried Thinx period panties. These period underwear are designed to be worn either with or without period products such as tampons or pads. I had the same period routine for probably about 8 or so years. The same brand of pads and tampons each month. It wasn’t until recently that I’ve started putting more thought into the products that I use since I’ve seen more articles and posts about the unknown ingredients in disposable products. I started switching to organic and chlorine free products, but also wanted to try other things that created less waste in the environment. After knowing about Thinx for a couple of years I decided that we can kinda try them together and become more aware and in control of what we put on and in our bodies!
What attracted me to period panties was that they could be worn alone. I briefly considered menstrual cups and discs, but could not quite wrap my mind around their practicality for every day. On their site, Thinx has different styles of panties that can accommodate heavier and lighter flows. They typically specify about how much the underwear can absorb. One of the first things I noticed, and what stopped me from trying them years ago, is the price point. They average about $30 a pop! To be real, most of the stuff that I wear on a day to day doesn’t include a single $30 item, so you can understand my reservation. The pair I chose were cotton briefs that were on sale for. . . $28.90 and were labeled as “moderate” and said to hold about 2 tampons (1 pad, 3/4 menstrual cup, 18 mL) worth of blood.
SN: I thought I was ready to spend $30 on a pair of panties, but when I got to the cart and saw that with shipping and tax they were almost $40 I was like, “nahhh.” Then I got this message. . .

crazy right?! This is the first time this has ever happened to me and I was a little taken aback. In the end though, it was effective because here we are lol.
For the trial I decided to wear them overnight. It was day 3 of my period which is kinda up in the air as far as flow goes. Sometimes it’s still like day 2, and sometimes it feels like its over. So, disclaimer, I’m not sure if I actually had a full tampons 2 worth. I had an XS and the fit was quite snug, which made me feel more secure. I put a towel down in my bed to catch any leakage, just in case the panties were a dud. I slept quite comfortably through the night and when I woke up in the morning. . . nothing. The underwear didn’t hold any moisture or smell.

I wasn’t planning on wearing them throughout the day, so I hand washed them in the sink and let them air dry. The care label says that they can be washed in the machine like regular, but I unfortunately do not have onsite laundry and didn’t want to have them sitting until laundry day.
Overall, I think these are great to sleep in. Not having to worry about getting up in the middle of the night to change a tampon or having to find strategic ways of getting out of the bed to not spill over is really unmatched. HOWEVER, I don’t know how practical this is for throughout the day. Having to change underwear (after about 2 tampons worth of blood) doesn’t quite make sense to me. Also, at $30 each I don’t think I could even afford to do this. But, I could see how they may be useful for women who wear tampons or cups/discs and may be afraid of leakage. In the end, I think that I wouldn’t mind using this method throughout the night during my cycle to sleep more comfortably and worry free.
I’m curious to know if you all have tried Thinx or other period panties before. Also, comment below if you use non-traditional period methods.
