Hey Brossy Woman!
This will be a quick one, but I really wanted to write about another Savannah restaurant that I have tried since I’ve been here. Before I do, I wanna point out that I love how relatively easy it has been finding black-owned businesses to support. With that being said, I have found that as I support and buy black more and more, I find I get a little reluctant to review their products/services. Because forreal if for some reason Amazon gave bad service or had a bad day, I let it be known, they apologize and that’s basically the end of it. The customer service agent writes down the complaint and it gets resolved, but ultimately nobody is really impacted (especially not Jeff Bezos). BUT when the same type of problem happens with a small business with less of a reputation, the hit may make more of a difference. I said this was going to be short, but I can never really get to the point right away huh? So long-story short if I don’t share (or go into much detail), either I wasn’t satisfied or I need to gather more info before I make a recommendation. However, ultimately anything I write about a restaurant, service, or product will be honest.
This restaurant review is about Black-owned 520 Wings here in Savannah. It was actually a restaurant that I found on Instagram before I moved here, so naturally I made my first visit the week I moved. The have a pretty large menu, but I always order the same thing. I’ve been there 4 times and each time I have gotten a Hot Lemon Pepper wing combo that comes with fries and a drink. My review is based off of the usual 4 categories.
Service/Dining Experience (2.5)
Although they have seating on the inside because of Rona and just because of the type of restaurant it is, I’ve never eaten inside. At least 2/4 times I’ve ordered there has been a high volume of customers so take-out in my opinion is the best way to go. As far as the service, the front-of-house staff is very informal and gets your order take fairly quickly. However, my biggest disappointment is the amount of time it takes to get food. 2/4 times I ordered I waited an hour for my wings. This was more frustrating because I ordered online and called in advance and was told my order would be ready “soon”. As I placed my order and after inquiring about the status of my order (after waiting for a long time and even after people who ordered after me received their order) I was give some variation of “soon” or “shouldn’t be long”. It seems like a popular place, so I can understand longer wait times, but my biggest issue was that I was strung along after waiting and waiting without staff being honest about being behind. The quickest turnaround was when I ordered around 1:00 on a Saturday. Because 2/4 of my visits were disappointing in this regard, I’ll give them 50% for this category.
Location/Facility (4/5)
I really like the inside of the restaurant. There is a spray painted and other types of art on the wall. The location is pretty convenient, located on a busy street here in Savannah. Their parking lot is kinda trash though and its hard to get in and out, especially when its busy. But overall I think they do pretty well in this category.
Food (5/5)
Like I said, I get wings over and over again (blame the Taurus in me). However, the wings are always good so I don’t have any complaints. Hot sauce and lemon pepper is probably the top 5 wing flavors in my expert wing-eating opinion. The fries are good if you can eat them while they’re hot, and dipping them in the sauce is just lovely. So seriously, no complaints.
Value (3.5/5)
I think the prices are very reasonable. My 10 pc combo with fries and a drink is around $11 with a drink. The value for the food is good. Factoring in everything thing else, if I’m hungry and want better service, I would be willing to give up the good prices. To be real though, I will likely go back again. I was originally going once a week, but after the second hour wait I didn’t go back for a while. This will probably be my strategy from here. When I want good wings and am prepared for a chance for unreasonably long waits, I will be there waiting on my 10 pc Hot-Lemon Pepper with fries and a Coke!
Altogether these categories average out to 3.75/5
